192.168.101.1 is the default IP address that is used by a number of router/modem brands. By default IP address, it means that this address is assigned to the device that is locally connected to your system/internet. Using 192.168.101.1 you will be able to connect to your modem/router and perform all sorts of configurations and tweaks. It is widely used by a number of brand manufacturers out there like – Asus, TP-Link, and D-Link. Almost every other manufacturer is using 192.168.101.1 as its default address (out of the box).
Okay, so then what is the admin panel? Well, it is basically the setup page that lets you manage your router/modem. Unlike traditional setup tools, this one has a very decent user interface that is intuitive and easy to use. Along with that, it provides you 100% backdoor access to your network connection. Here are some of the tweaks that one can perform with this admin access –
- You can manage your entire network from over here.
- You can manage access to your WiFi internet connection, change its password and even enable/disable a 5Ghz connection.
- You can even block people from accessing your network over here.
How to access 192.168.101.1 from a connected device?
So, you have connected your device to the router’s internet connection. Now you want to access this admin setup page. Well, first you need to ensure that the aforementioned IP address is valid for your system. In order to do that, you need to do the following –
- Connect the internet to your Windows laptop or desktop.
- Go to Start > Type Run > Type CMD > Press the Enter key.
- Inside the command prompt > Type ipconfig and press the Enter key.
If your device is connected wirelessly to the internet, find the heading that says ‘Wireless LAN adapter Wi-Fi’. Note down the default address (that is your router’s IP address).
In the case of a wired connection, look for the heading that says ‘Ethernet adapter Ethernet’. Again, your IP address is under the default address heading.
Now, when you know the address, open the web browser of your choice and do the following –
- Go to the address bar > Type in the IP address > Press Enter.
- You will be greeted by a login page – this is the admin console login page.
- Here you will have to enter the login credentials to your device. You can find them written on the backside of the router.
- Press Enter > Done.
How to change the WiFi password and SSID?
In order to change the network’s wireless password and name (SSID), here is what you need to do –
- Open any web browser > Type in the default IP/gateway address in the address bar > Hit Enter.
- Login using the device’s credentials.
- After that, once you are inside the admin panel, look for Wireless Settings.
- Wireless Settings > Security Settings > 2.4Ghz/5Ghz Settings.
- Go to the settings type of your choice > Ensure that the option that says Enable Wireless Internet Connection Type is checked.
- Type the SSID/name of your choice.
- Select the security mode – WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK.
- Type the WiFi password of your choice > Click on Apply.
- The router may restart but once it’s back on, your settings will be applied.
Why you should not keep your WiFi connection type to Open –
Having an open WiFi connection may be easy to manage, but trust me, it is not. An open internet connection means that anybody can access it whenever they want to. This makes the network highly susceptible to suspicious activities like hacking and cyber theft. So, be smart and ALWAYS keep that network password-protected.
BONUS – How to change the router login credentials?
Keeping any sort of default login for your network is bad. It makes the connection vulnerable and prone to malicious activities. So, first and foremost, you need to change the admin credentials. Here is how you can do that –
- Login to the admin panel.
- Go to the Router Maintenance page.
- Select the account type Admin (or useradmin).
- Type a good password > Confirm it just below by typing the same password.
- Click on Apply.
- The settings will take a few seconds to get applied.
- Done.
