192.168.49.1 is the default router configuration address that is used by a number of brands out there. But wait, what exactly is this IP address? It is the gateway IP that can be used to set up, configure and update routers/modems.

How to access 192.168.49.1?
The process of accessing this IP address is quite simple. You only need a few things for that – an internet-connected device and a web browser. Here is how you can access the admin panel –
- Connect your desktop/laptop/tablet/smartphone to your router’s network. It can be done both wired and wirelessly.
- After that, open any web browser, for instance, Google Chrome.
- Go to the address bar and type 192.168.49.1 > Press Enter.
- Alternatively, you can also click over here http://192.168.49.1.
- You will see a login page load a few seconds later.
- That is it, the router admin control panel.

In case you are not sure about your router’s default IP address, here is what you can do –
- Connect your desktop/laptop to the desired network.
- After that (on Windows) go to Start > Run > Command Prompt.
- Once inside the Command Prompt, type ipconfig and press Enter.
- You will see a list of different network names along with IPs.
- You need to search for your router’s name from the list. Your target IP address will be given under Default Gateway.
In case of Linux/Mac, here is what you need to do –
- Press Command + Space.
- Open the terminal.
- Type /ipconfig and press Enter.
How to change the router’s admin credentials?
Once you have accessed the router’s control panel, the very first thing that you need to do is to change the login credentials. Using default credentials is not recommended at all and is harmful for your network’s safety. Reasons for that are –
- Anybody with slight knowledge of routers/networks can access it.
- Third-party viruses can also access it online and harm your system/network.
Fun fact, the default login credentials are provided at the back of every modem/router along with the IP address. Anyway, here is how you can change the login credentials for your device –
- Open a web browser > Go to the address bar > Type 192.168.49.1 > Press Enter.
- Login using the default login credentials.
- Once you are logged in, go to the Admin Maintenance page.
- Change the username and password from over there and click on Apply.
- Wait for the router to restart and you are done!
How to change the WiFi SSID and password from 192.168.49.1?
In order to change your wireless network’s name (SSID) and password, this is what you need to do –
- Login to your router’s admin panel using the same steps mentioned earlier.
- Go to Wireless Network Settings > Select the network type, i.e. 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz.
- You will see the SSID option (just below the enable wireless network option). Change it to whatever you want to call it.
- Just below that, you will see the Enable Security Encryption option > Select it.
- Select the WPA/WPS-PSK2 type security > Enter the password of your choice.
- Click on Apply Changes.
- The router will restart and the new settings will get applied once it turns back on.
