192.168.178.1 is the default gateway or IP address that is used by Fritz Box routers. This IP is used in order to login to the web-based admin panel for the router. This panel is also known as the configuration panel. As the name suggests, you can configure the settings of your routing device and do all sorts of tweaks easily.
All you need is a web browser and a device that is connected to the aforementioned network. However, you will be able to make sure that you have a proper idea of your network’s IP address. In case you are not sure about that or in case 192.168.178.1 doesn’t work, you can do this:
- For Windows: Open command prompt > Type ipconfig.
Your IP address will be listed as Default Gateway.
- For Mac OS & Linux: Open terminal window > Type /sbin/ipconfig.
Here are some stuff that you can do with the admin panel:
- Managing your router, i.e. updating admin-password, username, and more.
- Managing your WiFi, i.e. updating WPA/WPA2 passwords, settings/updating SSIDs etc.
- Upgrading the router/modem firmware version. You can download it from the router brand’s website.
- Block websites, block devices, allow guest login, and much more.
How to login to 192.168.178.1?
The process of logging in to your network’s admin panel is quite easy. There are only two primary prerequisites for the same:
- A working router along with the IP address.
- A device that is connected to that network (wired/wireless).
Once you are ready, you need to:
- Open your web browser (Safari or Chrome) and go to the address bar.
- Over there you need to type 192.168.178.1 (or http://192.168.178.1). It will only take a couple of seconds for the admin page to load up.
- You will be supposed to enter a combination of admin username and password.
- Enter the username: admin
- Enter the password: admin
Hit enter and wait for the page to load up. Once the admin panel successfully loads up, you will see different settings that are not supposed to be messed around with.
How to change the wireless network SSID & password?
All routers tend to set a default wireless connection that is free from any password. In the case of dual-band routers, you will see two connections with the suffixes 2.4 and 5. However, it is highly recommended that you set a legible SSID along with a strong password. So, here are the steps you need to follow for that:
- Login to 192.168.178.1 and enter the credentials.
- Hit enter.
- Go to WLAN or WiFi settings.
- You will see your SSID over there and the security settings to open.
- Change the SSID as per your wish and check the tab that says secured.
- Use any alphanumeric (and special) character combination and set the password of your choice.
- Do the same for the 5Ghz network (you can also disable that option if you want).
- Click on save/update. Your router will reboot for the changes to take place.
- The settings will be automatically applied once it has restarted.
Alternatively, you can always reset the router in case you forget the WiFi credentials. Press and hold the reset button (present at the backside of the router). The router will reboot and once it starts, factory settings will be applied.
Changing the router’s admin credentials:
The steps are very easy and it is also highly recommended that you do so. Here are the steps that need to be followed:
- Enter 192.168.178.1 inside the address bar and hit enter.
- Login using the default credentials.
- Go to Router Settings & Maintenance > Username & Password.
- Enter the username of your choice.
- Enter the current password followed by the new admin password.
- Hit enter and again, your router will take a 10-second pause before the settings get applied.
- Done.
Kindly Note: Resetting the router will also reset the admin login credentials.
